A few weeks ago I couldn’t seem to focus on my writing. Finishing my novel left a huge void in my life. The uncertainty of not knowing whether it will be published or not left me unable to settle to writing anything new.
I run a Facebook writing group called For Writers Only, where I share information about competitions and open submissions. One of the group’s members, Shawn shared information about a publishing company called Black Hare Press .
Black Hare Press is based in Melbourne, Australia and publishes dark fiction in their anthologies .
While I read through their guidelines to see if it inspired me enough to write something, I read the details for their hundred word submission call out for their ‘Unravel’ a dark crime anthology.
An image sprang into my head.
I hastily wrote it down. After playing around with the words, I got my son to listen my first attempt. He pointed out I had misspelt one of the word. I then discovered I was also two words short. I gave myself a break and focused on sorting out dinner before reading through it again.
Back at my keyboard, I played around with the imagery rather than focusing on the hundred words. Once I understood what it was saying to me I changed the last seven words and the picture completed itself.
When my husband arrived home, we read through it together. I was still two words short. I then realised I didn’t need contractions in this piece for it to work and the problem was solved.
I sent my submission into Black Hare Press and received an email today to tell me they had accepted my piece of flash fiction ‘Fire Starter’.
I’m so excited.
The anthology publication is due on the 17th September in print and digital format.
Have a great week everyone.
